Six Days to Go to Constellation Field

After Tuesday, I have gone 16.13 miles on my ellipitcal walk from Stevens to Constellation Field. That leaves me with 6 and 17 hundredths of a mile to "walk" by the end of July 4.  I just passed under Beltway 8 on the Southwest Freeway frontage road.

Eight Days to Go to Constellation Field

I covered more ground over the weekend on my walk to Constellation Field.  My total distance covered through Sunday is 14.07 miles.  Near the end of the weekend, I passed the studios of KPRC, Channel 2 in Houston.

Now, I have only 8.23 miles left to cover and eight days.  Based on my calculations below, I need to go 1.03 miles each day(including the 4th of July) to make it to my destination by my deadline.

I hope I can make it.

I'm Halfway There

I walked 1.24 miles on Wednesday.  This distance brought my total to 11.41 miles.

The total distance from Stevens Elementary to Constellation Field is 22.3 miles.  One half of this total is 11.15 miles.  Having said that, I am just a little bit more than halfway to the finish.

I'm in Double Digits

After a few days off, I got back to walking on Tuesday.  My 1.14 mile jaunt brought me to a total of 10.17 miles.  This total puts me near the intersection of Highway 59 and Westpark Drive.  I passed Houston Premium Motorcars near the end of the "walk".

I've Got Nine Miles Behind Me

I was able to get some walking in on Thursday when I put in 1.3 miles.  That distance put my total at 9.03 miles.  That distance puts me near a Dave and Buster's on Fountainview near Richmond.  I can see Highway 59 just down the road.

Only 14.54 miles to Go

Two more days of walking on Monday and Tuesday took me to a spot a little bit west of the Galleria(pictured above).  How much farther do I have to go to make it to Constellation Field?  That is a great question.

I have now completed 7.76 miles.  The total distance to Constellation Field  is 22.3 miles.  Based on the calculations shown above, I have 14.54 miles left on my "journey".  Thanks for following along.

Another Day, Another 1.32 miles

I walked another 1.32 miles on Monday.  Not much to report although I did pass by the Houston Arboretum.  Have you ever been there?

The Walk to Constellation Field Passes the Five Mile Marq'e

I was able to go walking on Friday and Sunday .  On Sunday's leg, I "passed" the Marq'e Cinema near I-10 and Silber.  Have you ever seen a movie there?

As you can see below, the two days took me past the five mile mark for the trip with about three weeks to go.

One Step at a Time, The Walk Continues

I got back on the road Thursday, going 1.22 miles (one AND 22 hundredths miles).

Combined with Tuesday's distance of 1.32 miles, I have now covered 2.54 miles on my trip from Stevens Elementary to Constellation Field in Sugar Land.

Fittingly, the distance of Thursday's "walk" brought me to the Hattie Mae White Building.  This building is the headquarters of the Houston ISD.

A Boat that Floats... on Air

My "walk" to Constellation Field took a hiatus yesterday, but as a result, I encountered an interesting science lesson.

I had a conversation with a window salesman about argon gas, which is used in double-paned windows.  This gas is instrumental in building windows that efficiently keep hot air out of homes.

During the conversation, the salesman showed me the above video of an aluminum foil boat that appears to floats on air.  Actually, the boat is floating on argon gas, which is very dense.

It is a very intriguing video, which puts a new spin on the question of what sinks and what floats.

The Walk to Constellation Field Begins

I started my "walk" to Constellation Field yesterday.  I completed 1.32 miles on Day 1 (One AND 32 hundredths miles).  I passed the local post office and made it all the way to the Antone's near Loop 610 on T.C. Jester.

With just one day in the books, it is easy to calculate that my total for the trip so far is 1.32 miles.

More to come soon.

Ellipticizing to Constellation Field

This summer, I have been exercising on the elliptical machine pictured below on a regular basis.  I have started slowly traveling a little over a mile each day.  Yesterday, Monday, June 6, I went 1.23 miles.  (That is one and 23 hundredths miles)

Needless to say, the scenery while completing this exercise is not all that interesting.  So, I have decided to make a trip out of it (at least in my imagination.)  Between now and July 4 (28 days), my goal is to "walk" the distance from Stevens Elementary to Constellation Field in Sugar Land (the home of the Sugar Land Skeeters).  According to Google, this is a journey of 22.3 miles. (see map below)

I will be chronicling the "journey" and relying on my ability to add decimals to figure out how far I have gone.  Please follow along.  Bring a pencil and paper and keep your eyes on the goal.

Special Thanks to Stephen King and the writers of the TV show Modern Family from whom I borrowed this idea.

Math Word Search, Anyone?

Looking to keep your brain thinking about math this summer?  How about a word search?

This link should take you to word search that you can print out and solve.

Enjoy!

Buying Hot Dogs at Constellation Field

A Friday Word Problem:

Mr. Tauser went to a Skeeters' game on Thursday night in Sugar Land.  (Thank to the Skeeters for the free tickets #TeacherAppreciationNight).  During the game Mr. Tauser and his son bought food. They bought three Skeeter Dogs and two soft drinks.  The Skeeter Dogs were $4.50 each. The soft drinks were $2.00 each.  Mr. Tauser paid with a $20 bill.  How much money did he get back in change?

Solving this problem involves four steps (above).  First add the price of the three Skeeter Dogs for a total of $13.50.  Then, add the price of the two soft drinks to find $4.00.  Third, combine the price of the drinks and the dogs to determine that a total of $17.50 was paid for the food.  Finally, subtract the cost of the food ($17.50) from the $20.00 that Mr. Tauser gave the concession stand worker.

This final step gives you the answer of $2.50 that Mr. Tauser received in change.

How Old Would John Bateman Be?

I have always enjoyed baseball.  When I was young, I collected many baseball cards.  One of the things I liked about the cards was all of the statistics that could be found on their backs.  In fact, when I was in elementary school, I learned quite a bit of math on the back side of baseball cards.

For example, it was always a challenge to figure out how old a player was.  I could look at a card like the one above of John Bateman and determine what his age would be on his next birthday. Or to put it another way (if the player in question was no longer living), I could determine how many years had passed since John Bateman was born.

FYI: Determining passage of time in this manner is a concept that is covered in 4th grade math.

We can see on his baseball card that John Bateman was born on July 21, 1942.  If want to calculate how many years have passed since his birthday, I subtract 1,942 (the year he was born) from 2,016 (the current year).

Note: The answer of 74 years is accurate on John Bateman's birthday of July 21.  Prior to his birthday, only 73 years have passed.

Books About Scientists Who Struggled With... Science

I recently came across this article about the benefits of learning about famous scientists who struggled with science.  According to a study cited in the article, students who learn about scientists who struggled with science are more motivated to learn about science.

The article  mentions several books about such scientists.  If you get a chance this summer, see if you can find a few of these books at the local library and read them.
